The Missing Smile
On the edge of a peaceful countryside, where rolling green hills stretched toward the horizon and wildflowers danced in the breeze, lived a cheerful little pug named Biscuit.
No matter where he went, Biscuit carried joy with him.
He greeted butterflies as though they were old friends, waved happily to every bird perched in the trees, and never missed an opportunity to compliment someone's beautiful garden or bright smile.
To Biscuit, happiness was something meant to be shared.
One sunny morning, as he skipped along a winding forest path, he noticed something unusual.
His friend Oliver, a young hedgehog, was sitting quietly beneath an old oak tree.
Normally Oliver loved collecting colorful leaves and exploring the woods, but today he stared silently at the ground.
Biscuit walked over and sat beside him.
"Good morning!" he said with his usual bright smile.
Oliver gave a tiny nod.
"Not such a good morning," he sighed.
Biscuit looked around.
The birds were singing.
The flowers were blooming.
A gentle breeze rustled the leaves overhead.
"It seems like a beautiful day," Biscuit said softly.
"It probably is," Oliver replied.
"I just can't feel it."
Biscuit didn't rush to cheer him up.
He simply stayed.
After a few quiet moments, he asked, "Would you walk with me?"
Oliver shrugged.
"I guess."
As they wandered through the forest, Biscuit stopped often.
He admired a ladybug resting on a leaf.
He laughed as two squirrels chased each other around a tree.
He pointed toward fluffy clouds shaped like turtles and dragons.
Oliver barely smiled.
But he kept walking.
Soon they reached a small stream.
Biscuit carefully picked up a smooth stone.
"Want to see something fun?"
He tossed it gently across the water.
Skip.
Skip.
Skip.
Oliver watched.
Then Biscuit handed him another stone.
Oliver tossed it.
Plunk.
Both of them laughed.
"It takes practice," Biscuit grinned.
Oliver tried again.
Skip.
Then twice.
Then three times.
For the first time all morning, a real smile appeared on his face.
They spent the afternoon skipping stones, watching butterflies, sharing snacks, and lying in the grass naming shapes in the clouds.
As the sun began to set, Oliver looked at Biscuit.
"You never tried to convince me to be happy."
Biscuit smiled.
"I couldn't."
Oliver looked puzzled.
"You can't force a smile."
He looked toward the glowing horizon.
"But sometimes you can remind someone where to find one."
Oliver nodded quietly.
"I thought happiness was something I had lost."
Biscuit gently shook his head.
"Sometimes joy doesn't disappear."
"It just gets buried beneath worry."
As they walked home beneath the golden evening sky, Oliver noticed something.
The birds sounded a little sweeter.
The breeze felt a little warmer.
The flowers seemed a little brighter.
Nothing around him had changed.
His heart had simply remembered how to notice the good again.
From that day forward, whenever Oliver had difficult days, he didn't pressure himself to be happy immediately.
Instead, he would take a walk.
Skip a few stones.
Watch the clouds.
Smile at someone passing by.
Because he had learned that joy rarely arrives all at once.
It quietly returns one beautiful moment at a time.
